The Thing That We Call Time

Nobody young understands how it passes

Time is a river without any end

We splash and we dive and we race to the surface

Impatient to see around every bend.

Days, they do fill, with all manner of matters

Matters of pride as each skill we acquire

Mastery grows, so we too, grow as ladders

That struggle to reach what we think we require.

Take it from a friend

From a ways down the road

It’s a beautiful gift

We receive when we’re born

The thing that we call time

The thing that we call time.

Life goes on and before too long

As our heart’s desires become clear

On and on in a race we run

Against doubt and worry and fear.

(But) Should you see stars brush the trees up above you

Moonlight cast shadows wherever you tread

If life’s misadventures can’t help but delight you

Forget every word that an old man has said.

(Or) Take it from a friend

From a ways down the road

It’s a wonderful gift

That cannot be replaced

The thing that we call time

The thing that we call time

The thing that we call time

The thing that we call time.
